NYC: Scenes from Union Square Greenmarket 6.5.2010

I am Florida Girl in DC and I am a farmers market addict. I don't just love shopping at my local markets, I even like visiting farmers markets when I travel. So when I found myself in New York City this weekend, tops on my to-do list was visiting Union Square Greenmarket. In many ways, Union Square along with chefs like Danny Meyer started the whole market to table locavore movement.
Me, geeking out at Union Square Greenmarket
Founded in 1976 with only 12 farmers, Union Square Green market is now the largest and most diverse outdoor urban farmers market network in the country. Today over 200 family farms and fishermen participate, and over 30,000 acres of farmland are protected from development.

Here's a peek at what's in season near the Big Apple this week:
It's like a built in shopping list to design the week's menu!

Radishes & Carrots

Mini Daisies & Sunflowers
I've been trying to find Duck Eggs at my Farmers Market. At Union Square they had Turkey and Pheasant Eggs - along with taste descriptions. Not all eggs taste the same!

Pea Shoots - great for salads, pastas, pizzas & crepes!
Peonies - my favorite flower
I'll always love Plant City, FL strawberries the most - but Jersey can grow a decent berry too!
Union Square Chef Throwdown! Sunday's challenge was around seafood.
Luckily, there was a wide variety of fish, mussels and shellfish.
